Preview of new Google Documents editor available

A preview of the new Google Documents editor is now available on an opt-in basis.

- Key features: New ruler for margins and tab stops, floating image placement, new commenting structure in the document margin and instant messaging in the sidebar.
- Performance improvements: Documents now supports character-by-character real-time collaboration.

How to access what’s new:
To allow users to opt-in to use the new editor, in the administrative control panel, administrators need to enable the checkbox ‘Enable pre-release features’ in ‘Domain Settings’. Users can then select the ‘New version of Google documents’ option in the ‘Documents settings’ area of Google Docs

Note: Starting on May 3rd, 2010 we’re temporarily phasing out support for offline access to Google Docs through Gears while we work on new and improved HTML5-based offline access. For more information on this, please visit the Help Center.

Preview of new Google Spreadsheets editor available

A preview of the new Google Spreadsheets editor is now available on an opt-in basis.

- Key features: Faster loading and scrolling of large spreadsheets, drag & drop columns, formula editing bar and formula highlighting, auto-complete, improved sheet navigation.
- Performance improvements: Improved speed of initial loading, scrolling, cell freezing, collaborative editing, and more.

How to access what’s new:
To allow users to opt-in to use the new editor, in the Admin Control Panel, administrators need to enable the checkbox ‘enable pre-release features’ in ‘Domain Settings’.
- When editing a spreadsheet, users will then see a ‘new version’ link on the top of any spreadsheet. Clicking on this link allows a user to opt-in to use the new editor.
- If users wish to opt-out again, click on ‘older version’ to use the older editor without affecting the spreadsheet.

Google Drawings: a new collaborative drawings editor released as part of Google Docs

Google Docs now has a collaborative drawings editor that makes it easy to build organizational charts, flow charts, design diagrams and much more.

- Share drawings just like any other Google Doc
- Download in a variety of formats
- Co-edit and view changes in real real-time

- Use web clipboard to easily insert into other Google Docs
- Publish drawings as images and embed anywhere

在 Google 的 Atmosphere 会议上，Google 宣布了 Google Docs 的重大更新，其中最吸引人瞩目的无疑是新加入的实时协作功能。

之前 Google Docs 中的协作虽然也允许多个人同时对一个文档进行编辑修改，但是各个参与者看到的变化实际上都是几分钟同步一次的，也就是说你会突然发现某个地方多了几句，或者若干个单元格的数据瞬间发生了变化。而现在 Google Docs 的协同工作已经完全实时化——简单来说，就是和 Google Wave 中的效果一样，你这边输入一个字，所有的协作者马上可以看到！

另外，Google Docs 还加入了绘图功能，用户可以通过菜单的 Insert – > Drawing 来调用之。Google Drawing 在多人协同工作时，通过流程图，图表等分享自己的创意和思路非常的好用。

其他的一些更新包括：

文档和电子表格加入若干新功能：大量用户呼声较高的功能已经实现，文档中加入了边缘尺 ( margin ruler )，字母和标号，图片放置功能也有所改善。电子表格中新增公式编辑条，单元格自动完成，单元格拖放等功能。

更精准的文档导入功能：现在导入到 Google Docs 的文档将更忠实于原始文档，用户不用像以前那样抓狂的调整字母和编号等格式了。

更快的速度与响应：诸如更快的 JavaScript 解析速度等浏览器技术让 Google Docs 的大幅提速成为可能，现在即使是非常巨型的电子表格也可以在浏览器中运行如飞，让你完全感觉不到你是在云端运行这些应用。

实时协作：新增的 Drawing 和文档组件都支持了多达50人的逐字实时协作。

Google Docs still lags Microsoft Office in features, but tries to make up for that by being a better way to edit and share docs and spreadsheets collaboratively among co-workers or anyone else. The key is to make it feel as responsive as a desktop app, even though it is in the cloud. During a briefing, Sabharwal showed a slide comparing the two, with check marks next to all of Google Docs’ supposed advantages (realtime multi-user editing, IM, storage in the cloud, mobile web access, no patches or updates, free with Google Apps).

He also showed the slide below, which is more conceptual than anything else in that it is not based on any data. But it does illustrate how Google thinks about attacking Office from below and winning over time by becoming a better collaboration tool. What I love about the chart, though, is that it places Google Docs in 2010 at just below Office 2003 in terms of an individual authoring tool. Of course, Microsoft is also moving to the cloud with Office 2010, and I’m sure they can make marketing charts which look very different.

Google Docs 开始显示音频文件的详细信息

尽管 Google Docs 已经允许用户上传最大 1GB 的单个文件，但是用户还是完全没有办法预览存在 Google Docs 中的文件，也就是说你无法在线试听/收看你上传的音频/视频文件。

不过 Google 貌似已经在着手解决这个问题了，Trey D. 发现现在将 .MP3 文件上传到 Google Docs 后，会自动显示出歌曲标题和专辑封面，虽然还无法在线播放，但是可以想象的是，这个功能应该离我们不远了。

If your username is being collected when you submit to a form created in Google Spreadsheets, you now have a new option to also receive an email summary of your responses for your reference.

At the bottom of a Spreadsheets form when the username is being collected, enable/disable the checkbox ‘Send me a copy of my responses’ to receive the summary email.

问：在你们就职于Google期间看到的最自豪的是什么？

Alan：搜索和通用搜索将图片和巨大的网络带到你面前，还有最近我们的广告业务和我们的发布商的合作也变得越来越多。

问：什么是公众云？什么又是私有云？语意上有区别吗？

Vint：这不仅是语意上的区别。私有云很作为合理的私有互联网存在，Google公司需要为其它公司提供云，并为这些公司制作工具。我们这里制作的云都是工具，它们需要随时随地都可以访问。它们互相是不冲突的。在云形成的阶段，云之间的互动还是非常明显的，不过还没有词汇来表达说请在某一天将“A 片云”移动到“B片云”。

问：Jeff一直专注于 Google Apps 和其它系统，我们都知道Google以快速发布产品著称，那么Google如何解决大企业的需求呢（他们需要产品有可预测性）？

Jeff：我们试图将二者都做到最好。我们已经在加速可靠性和安全性方面的投入，在消费者领域也在同步进行。比如Gmail默认HTPPS连接、登录历史。对企业领域来说另外一个重要部分是：可缩放的规模支持。

问：我们最近看到网络中立性方面的变化，你们是怎么应对的？

Vint：我们在全球来说都显然非常依赖运营商。对于网络中立性的重点已经被扭曲了。我们关注的是反竞争的行为。我们最大的担心不是所有包络包都能一视同仁的对待，也不是你必须对这些网络包多加关心，而是确保有你的一席之地。所以公司提供的服务需要有平等机会使用户得到这些产品。如果你是一个收费提供视频的公司，你同时还提供带宽接入，很可能你会限制用户观看竞争对手的视频网站。

Vint：我对Google开始部署IPv6感到非常自豪，我看到通过无线传输互联网的巨大潜力。我看到互联网利用无线传输的巨大可能性。

Alan：我们还专注于HTML5，我们有一个巨大的团队在做这个。

问：说到这个，你可以谈谈原生应用和HTML5之间的冲突吗？

Alan：在我进入这个行业的时候就已经有本地应用与网络脚本之间的争论了。本地应用可以获得全部的资源是无法逾越的鸿沟。我认为有趣的是，现在那些应用程序也可以访问互联网，这些应用都将互联网作为一个工具来用，而网络是有能力开发出一个可以运行于任何设备的能力，所以这里有巨大的潜力。但是目前在互动方面HTML5和本地应用还是有巨大的差距，现实最关键的问题是如何缩小这个差距。我们必须解决这个，这也是为什么HTML5对我们很重要的原因。

Jeff：如果你需要将应用扩展到不同设备上，目前的应用模型就无法很好解决，HTML5正擅长于此。

Alan：我们还有一个团队在研究所谓的”原生客户端“。拿到代码，保护起来，并以原生速度运行。一旦这个技术成型了，就会大大提升网络应用可作事情的门槛。

Vint：对于互联网可提供的这些服务我感到非常鸡冻。

问：关于将Google消费者服务提供给企业用户的事情？

Dave Girouard：我们是想将所有Google服务提供给企业用户，比如 Google Voice 和Blogger等等。

问：关于Google宽带的计划？

Vint：我们希望看到每秒上Gb的网络能提供给用户。现实的问题确实是技术和成本上的。我认为我们的商业模型是全球其它企业无法复制的，我们被很多人告知Gb网络的成本和难度，但这正好是我们了解自己的一种方式。

Alan：你也许网络我们在山寨城早就已经提供无线网络了。其目的就是想看看它运行的如何，而不是想把它推广到别处。你是无法在书本上学到某些事情的，有事你必须亲自尝试才能知道其中的问题所在。
